Any purpose served in a language being sesquipedalian?
"The cognitive processes involved in producing and understanding linguistic communication" is how a language is defined and how is shud be!From the years when we used sounds to communicate to this day where we have some hundreds of scripts and thousands of dialects,a language has been used as the most preferred mode of communication as against intuition,ESP or telepathy which are rarefinds till date.
Language has become a more intersting study now and having a strong vocabulary is very much appreciated for it helps one to enhance the felicity of his expression.Well,all this is feasible only if both the people in a conversation have a comparable vocabulary.Its common sense to guess the background of the audience one's speech is targetting and accordingly tone up or tone down the language.This trait is always appreaciated and has been found in all great men whose honest intentions were that they wanted their message to reach the audience without any ambiguity.
But,we never run short of misfits in any field and even this basic communication field is no exception.Infact,the word SESQUIPEDALIAN has become a thing of concern nowadays because of such people.Mr.Sesquan has made it a point to say something in as complicated a way as possible using as obscure a word as possible having as many syllables as possible such that the audience loose the content and start concentrating on the words,distorting the basic cognitive process in the communication.Mr.Sesquan usally wants the listener to appreciate his Vocab.He wants the listener to feel his own lack of vocabulary when compared to the speaker.He wants to force the listener to be inarticulate and in the process,fails to understand that he has made a mess of the conversation by totally distorting the information he wanted to convey.The worst part of the story is that the speaker usually feels a sigh of happiness with a satiated ego and an assumed air of superiority.Little does his misconception make him understand that he has eventually won the hatred of the listener for a satiated ego almost always leaves behind another hurt ego!Bold listeners come out with a repartee making the speaker understand the basic flaw in his intention.Those reasonable souls with already weakend ego plead the speaker for a explanation.Defeatism might force someone to just shut up and act as if they understand every bit of it,much to the happiness of the speaker who knows the listener is not that capable.Others,used to the speakers style,enjoy making fun of him the moment he clears the scene!
Asked how a movie was,Mr.Dreamworks said it was "temerariously meretricious and the Director has made a flaw in the screen play bloody damn obtrusive!"....I dint get anything out of this and I dont think anyone sane will immediately do so.And no matter whatever movie I see with Dreamworks,I will never ever ask him again for an opinion!He has lost the critic in him to his own words!And rarely do sesquans get true friends and these friends also happen to be one of the same breed.
