Dear You,
Cars are the primary mode of transport in US. Almost everyone owns one and usually, the car count is a very good approximation of the headcount in a city. It is much more than luxury here coz for each and everything that we need to do outdoors, we need to drive. City Buses and Subway Trains ( in select cities) do help, but cars are the most comfortable and time saving mode of transport. Travelling within a radius of 100 miles and getting back home is considered a pretty normal outing for a evening in the US! I happened to travel a near hundred miles to a city called Lexington in Kentucky just to watch a movie once!
People travel like crazy here. This madness for travelling is mainly because of the marvellous roadways. Interstates as they are called are so well planned and websites like Yahoo Maps and MapQuest make it really easy to find the route and just drive down to any destination. It can be said that for a proper independent life in the US, learning driving is a prime requisite. And that is exactly what I did this Friday.
I have driven considerably in India and so I was not all that new. If you are touching the wheels for the first time in the United States, then it might take you well under a couple of hours to learn all that you have to learn in driving. If you have already driven a car, then there is nothing you'll 'learn'. Driving here is very easy compared to India in some ways. Almost all cars have automatic transmission and all u need to do is keep your eyes open and look for the signals and indications on the road as we drive! Thats about it. In some ways, it is dangerous Coz, whatever happens in the Interstates, happens at more than 65 MPH. Nothing really will happen coz its all so simple but if something happens, its a point of no return. Unlike India, there is no honking, no bumping and excusing or such. Its all silent and mind-your-way kinda stuff. In the City Roads you almost always have a hassle free driving experience as the speed limits are low as well. The driver plays a role as much as the others sitting in the car!!
Driving Test is pretty simple but more often, people tend to not look at the speed limits or lack in their ability to maneuver the car at will. So, getting the license at first go is usally a rare case here. I was lucky enough to get it all right in the first attempt and am all set legally to step on the gas!
Definitely,
Me.
